Traditionally, our programming has been focused on coordinating international visitors through the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) as well as welcoming international students, and administering a college scholarship program. We are excited to begin increasing our focus on celebrating the rich international communities that exist in our city.
PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.
All of our programming serves our mission to build bridges between diverse cultural communities here in Central New York, and around the world. We are one of the 82 recognized community-based-member organizations that facilitate the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program, and we also administer the Betty Wiles Scholarship program. We have some exciting new projects on the horizon as well!
International Visitor Leadership Program
We are a part of the community based member network that supports the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. Each year we host several groups of leaders from different countries who come to Syracuse to learn about a particular topic or theme. Leveraging the expertise of local educators, business executives, community organization leaders, we develop itineraries for these groups and provide them with opportunities for cultural exchange.
Cultural Community Organization Hub
Launched in the Summer of 2021 the International Center of Syracuse is compiling a list of organizations in Syracuse that aim to support or celebrate diverse cultural communities - including cultural heritage groups, ethnicity-focused groups, refugee and new American groups, and/or others with an interest in the international aspects of our city. We hope to sponsor a monthly virtual meeting for group leaders to network, connect, and collaborate.
Betty Wiles Scholarship
This scholarship program provides $500 to two high school seniors in Onondaga or Oswego County who demonstrate an interest in international exchange at home and abroad, and who are planning to major in an internationally-focused subject in college. The scholarship has provided tens of thousands of dollars in support to local high school students in the decades since it's inception. The application for the Class of 2022 will be released in December 2021 - please check back then for a link to the online application.
Foreign Language Story Time
We are currently developing a foreign language story-time program in collaboration with local educational organizations that would provide local families an opportunity to introduce their children to languages other than English in a free, community-based setting.
Foodie Feature Friday
The city of Syracuse has such an incredible international food scene - what's not to celebrate?! We are currently developing partnerships with local, internationally-inspired eateries in order to spotlight one new restaurant the first Friday of each month - and organize an International Center happy hour there.
Global Syracuse Walking Tour
Syracuse is an incredibly diverse city, and in the age of COVID-19, why not plan a "global" staycation right here in town. We are working with the new members of the Cultural Organizations Hub to curate a Global Syracuse Walking Tour - that will support, celebrate, and educate!
